Anyone designated in DOT regulations as a safety-sensitive employee is subject
to DOT drug & alcohol testing. What follows is an overview of what jobs are
defined as safety-sensitive functions subject to testing.

Workplace Testing

Workplace Drug Testing. Drug testing is one action an employer can take to determine if employees or job applicants are using drugs. It can identify evidence of recent use of alcohol, prescription drugs and illicit drugs.

Court ordered Testing

There are many situations in which someone may be legally required to undergo drug testing, including agreements between divorcing spouses, DUI or DWI arrests, probation, pre-trial services, and child custody arrangements.

Random drug testing can seem overwhelming and stressful. The court will allow you to select a drug testing center, and you will be told how frequently and for what duration of time you must endure this hassle. For example, you might have 1 drug test a week for 6 months, but you don’t know which day it will be. It is entirely up to the court system how often your testing will be, but be prepared for it. Chances are you will at least need to submit to testing from your first appearance in court until you are actually sentenced.

Family/home use

Families should consider using testing methods that best support the specific reason for
testing. For example, a family may want to use hair testing once or twice a year to
reconfirm negative drug use and to provide the children with a persuasive excuse for
not using when approached to do so by peers and others. An oral fluids test for
breaking curfew or after a party is easily administered and not burdensome.
